It’s oh so sad that God decided to take you in his arms tonight-

He’d concluded that your lifetime journey had to come to a close and then showed you his beautiful light.

You closed your eyes as you whispered your final good-bye and to Heaven’s gate you soared-

No longer are you present here on this Earth, but instead have found yourself at God’s door.

The Angels were there to welcome your presence and quickly measured you for your wings-

Then they held you close and sang for you, as the church bells loudly did ring.

But, while you’re in Heaven, and peaceful and content, your family still grieves for you-Please know that even though you’re in a better place, we will never stop loving you!

So now it is time for us to reminisce on how you have blessed us all-

You helped us to face adversity and through troubling times we were able to stand so tall.

So, yes, we will shed some tears, but we will also remember the good times, too-

Where once we were able to spend some quality time together, we now have only memories of you.

And although your life has now ended, another journey for you has begun-

God chose this new path for you to take, so who are we to judge?

But a place in our hearts is where you will stay and from there forever grow-

We love you and wish you only the best, but it’s now our time to let you go!

Meet local teen fantasy author, K.E. Bruder

Local author, from right here in Shortsville, will be in the library all evening signing copies of her first novel, The Tir Nan Og chronicles : the curse of the lost onyx. Bruder, who is just a teenager herself, has been autographing at Borders in Victor and Barnes & Noble in Pittsford and now at RJCL. The novel is about a girl named Elisabeth O'Reilly who grew up being told of a mythical land called Tir Nan Og and its ten towns. Years later she finds out the fairy tales are real.

3rd Annual Red Jacket Community Library Poetry Contest

To enter you must first write an original poem, then put your name, age and phone number on the BACK. Finally, submit the poem to the library by May 4th. You may send your entry by mail or drop it off at the library. One entry per person. All ages are welcome to submit. Poems will be posted in the library and judged by our patrons.

Prize categories will be:

Adult (age 18 and up),

Young Adult (ages 13-17), and

Juvenile (ages 12 and under).

Prizes will be given at an Awards Ceremony and Open Mike night to be held at the Ice Cream Shoppe & Coffee Café, 9 North Main St., Manchester on June 2 at 7PM.

We will talk about The Life of Pi by Yann Martel.

Yann Martel's imaginative and unforgettable Life of Pi is a magical reading experience about adventure, survival, and ultimately, faith. The precocious son of a zookeeper, 16-year-old Pi Patel is raised in Pondicherry, India, where he tries on various faiths for size, attracting "religions the way a dog attracts fleas." Planning a move to Canada, his father packs up the family and their menagerie and they hitch a ride on an enormous freighter. After a harrowing shipwreck, Pi finds himself adrift in the Pacific Ocean, trapped on a 26-foot lifeboat with a wounded zebra, a spotted hyena, a seasick orangutan, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. After much gore and infighting, Pi and Richard Parker remain the boat's sole passengers, drifting for 227 days through shark-infested waters while fighting hunger, the elements, and an overactive imagination.

The Shack by William P. Young
Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant "The Shack" wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?"

Mid—Winter 2009 Book Discussion Series

Over the course of the next four months, January through April, we will explore the concept of FAITH. How does one learn to have faith? Isn’t faith just for the simple minded? Does logical thinking allow faith?

One of the “great” thinkers of our time, Archie Bunker, said: “"Faith is something you believe that nobody in his right mind would believe." While skeptic Richard Dawkins is quoted as saying: “Faith is one of the world's great evils."

What do you think? What will you think after reading and discussing the four novels chosen for our Mid—Winter Community Book Discussion Series?

MY FAVORITE BOOK

January 2009 we will launch the "MY FAVORITE BOOK" project in honor of the Library's 10th year of operation. Come to the library and we will offer to take your picture with you favorite book. Everyone's pictures will be posted at the library. Any of us can help you (Andrea, Chris, Patsy, Bonnie or Kathleen) find your book and take your picture. 10th Birthday Party for Red Jacket Community Library

Red Jacket Community Library 10th Birthday Party was celebrated December 6th from 1PM—3PM. Approximately 150 people attended including Senator Mike Nozzolio and Assemblyman Brian Kolb. This was also a party for all of the public libraries in Ontario County, since all 12 of the libraries now belong to the online shared catalog known as OWWL (www.owwl.org).

First, we were entertained by the Red Jacket Madrigals singing group. We held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, a variety of Free Raffles were drawn and we served from 10 birthday cakes made especially for the library by Sunshine Bakery in Shortsville.

Chistmas Cookie Contest

We held our first Community-wide Christmas Cookie contest tonight at the Library. Cookies were officially judged by the owner of the Sunshine Bakery in Shortsville. The public also was able to sample cookies and vote for a “popular vote” prize.
The winner of the contest, Macie King, age 13, of Shortsville, actually won both prizes for her Chocolate Chip cookie with walnuts. Macie is pictured here with owners of the Sunshine Bakery and the Library Director.
We plan to have this become an annual December event.

Perfect little pumpkins were painted here at Red Jacket Community Library on October 22, 2008. Pumpkins were donated courtesy of Fresh Ayr Farms. Even the adults enjoyed themselves.

RJ Madrigal Singers visit with PreSchool StoryTime Group

On 10/15/08, we were fortunate to have the newly revitalized Red Jacket Madrigal Singers visit with our PreSchool StoryTime Group. The kids made crowns and ribbon headpieces after enjoying a few classic fairy tales.

Pizza Taste-Off Results

On Monday, Sept 29, 2008 we held a Pizza-Taste-Off at RJCL. 24 RJ teens participated in a blind taste test of pizzas from local pizzerias. Winners were:

SUMMER READING PARTY 2008

The 2008 Summer Reading Party was held the evening of July 29th. 226 kids, ages 1-18, had registered for the program which began on June 14th. The party was attended by approximately 125 people, including family and friends of reading program participants. Each and every participant was able to choose a prize and a brand new book to take home. Readers were divided into 3 categories, by age. The teen reader who read the greatest number of miutes (31,800 minutes) was Kassandra Verbridge. The intermediate reader who read the most (6,600 minutes) was Sabrina Verbridge. The primary reader who read the most (1,800 minutes) was Madeline Schaertl. The party featured 2 pinatas and a huge cake. We were also able to raffle off a Guitar Hero Aerosmith bundle which was won by the Sean Schumacher family. Lots and lots of fun was had by all who joined us for the party. The Friends of the Library funded the incredible party. Thanks, Friends! This community really "CAUGHT THE READING BUG" this summer.

A classic Ice Cream Social was held at the Library on Tuesday, July 22nd. Ice Cream was provided by the Ice Cream Shoppe located at 9 North Main St., Manchester. 5 new sundaes were created by owners, Tom & Joanne Van Laeken. Approximately 70 people came to enjoy the ice cream, chat and hang out at the Library! Thanks, Tom & Joanne!

Crafts with Chris - Summer Style

Magician and comedian David Moreland, of Ithaca, entertained us on July 8th with a great show. For more pictures, see the Canandaigua newspaper, the Daily Messenger, from Monday, July 14th. About 60 people attended the event. Kids and adults were laughing hysterically as David played the role of an Australian Safari Guide to go with our Summer Theme: "Catch the Reading Bug."

July 15th marked the date of our wildly successful Butterfly Release Party. Lindsay Kuhn of Smoke Ridge Farms, Bloomfield, led the program. Luckily, we had exactly enough butterflies to go around! Just anouther part of our "Catch the Reading Bug" Summer Reading Program. At one point, Library Clerk Christina Ingalls even had a butterfly fly up the leg of her capri shorts!

Mardi Gras concert featuring Ebb Tide

Mardi Gras at the Library! On Fat Tuesday (Feb. 5, 2008) we had a concert featuring Ebb Tide, a local band from Rochester. They played 2 hours of classic rock with a Caribbean twist for a crowd of about 60. Of course, we handed out purple, green and gold beads but, we did not require anyone to show us their breasts! :)

Easter Egg Hunt

On Thursday, March 20, 2008 we held our annual Easter Egg hunt for preschoolers and toddlers. About 30 kids came and found over 100 eggs hidden in the Childrens' section of the Library. Luckily, the Easter bunny knew that the Red Jacket Community Library is at 7 Lehigh Ave., Shortsville.

Drumcliffe School of Irish Dance

A group of 16 dancers from the Rochester Drumcliffe School of Irish Dance performed at the Library on March 13, 2008. The program was held in the foyer of the Library so that we could here the clogging. A great time was had by approximately 60 community members of all ages who attended the event.

Summer Reading Bash

The Summer Reading Bash was held last night, August 8th. We had 183 kids, from ages 1 - 18, sign-up for our New York State Summer Reading program this year called Get a Clue @ your library. About 100 Summer Reading participants and their family members came to the party last night. We gave out prizes and new books to every reader with Miguel Benito reading 108 books in the age 1-6 group, Sabrina Verbridge reading 234 books in the 7-12 age group and Kassandra Verbridge reading 31 books in the teen group. 2 pinatas were broken with candy raining down from the library ceiling. Then, everyone then enjoyed a delicious cake and punch. The bash ended with a free raffle drawing for a brand new Nintendo DS Lite! Our lucky winner was Erin Hurley. It was a totally awesome time - ask anyone who was here. Prizes and refreshments were provided by the Friends of the Red Jacket Community Library.

Harry Potter Film Festival

Airplay Jugglers

Wed., Aug. 1st, at 6PM, we had an awesome juggling and comedy routine by Airplay Jugglers. Featuring six-foot high unicycles. The father and son juggling team, Jeff and Wes Peden, came to the library from Rochester. We had 67 community members attend this free event!
